National Geographic Hires Two New Editors to Expand Travel Coverage

National Geographic Partners (NGP) today announced two new senior editors joining the travel editorial team: Jennifer Barger and Anne Kim-Dannibale. Barger, the former editor in chief of FW, the Washington Post’s fashion magazine, and Kim-Dannibale, who joins National Geographic from Where Traveler. Both will help grow National Geographic’s reimagined travel media business by developing compelling travel content across a range of platforms.

The hires were announced today by executive editor George Stone.

“Travel is among the world’s largest industries and it’s among the pursuits that people are most passionate about,” said Stone. “So there has never been a more pressing need for trustworthy, timely, and inspiring articles to help consumers choose the planet’s most rewarding and sustainable travel experiences. Anne and Jennifer bring need-to-know reporter’s instincts, a breadth of destination expertise, and a National Geographic spirit of adventure to our digital content."

Barger is an award-winning digital and print media specialist whose stories on travel, food, home, history and fashion subjects have appeared in Delta Sky, Travel + Leisure, Washington Post, Washingtonian, DC Magazine, Where, and National Geographic Traveler. She was also the founding editor in chief of the Washington Post’s fashion magazine, FW.

Kim-Dannibale joins National Geographic from Where Traveler where she served as the Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Baltimore group editor. She began her journalism career covering crime, government, and local personalities for newspapers in California before shifting to magazines, including launching a lifestyle title for Asian American women in 2003.

The appointments of Barger and Kim-Dannibale come as National Geographic implements a revamped strategy around how they are delivering travel storytelling to their global audience. As part of the strategy, National Geographic’s celebrated travel journalism will expand on digital platforms and through the 17 local language editions of Traveler magazine published around the globe. Additionally, National Geographic magazine will include travel content in every issue starting in January.

Travel’s editorial content for 2020 will focus primarily on the areas of sustainable travel, UNESCO World Heritage, national parks, and family travel.
